Jones Park

From time to time we have the pleasure of enjoying the results of collaboration between talented owners and a highly skilled builder. Here, the owners’ southern tastes and Hobbs Construction have produced a classic, custom-built, New England Colonial, combining details of antebellum Charleston with the contemporary needs of an active young family, on a private lane in the heart of Riverside.

Formal in front, casual in back - and light-filled throughout - there are 9-foot ceilings and cherry floors. The elegant entry features a grand volute staircase with sidelight and overlight designs from a Charleston plantation. A gracious living room has a fireplace with a classic mantel and an inviting window seat. In the formal dining room, an antique leaded-glass transom echoes the entrance windows. A library with vaulted ceiling opens to a wraparound verandah. Across the back of the house, and also opening to the verandah, terrace and level lawn beyond, is the large kitchen/family room by Christopher Peacock. There are two marble-topped islands, top-of-the-line appliances, an expansive dining area, and a fireplace set in a wall of reclaimed cherry built-ins. A butler’s pantry with refrigerator is accented by New Orleans tile. A mudroom has a full bath and walk-in pantries.

Upstairs, the master bedroom has two walk-in closets and a large marble bath with distinctive, twin, nickel and marble vanities inspired by a European hotel. Three more bedrooms, two baths, laundry room and a big playroom complete the second floor. The third floor is a large carpeted and finished room with a bath, easily divided into additional bedrooms. A full, 2000 square foot unfinished basement has high ceilings. This is a wonderful house, done with exquisite taste.
